Iowa City, Iowa
City with a population of 74,828 in 2020; the fifth-largest city in Iowa. County seat of Johnson County. The city was commissioned by the territorial legislature in 1839, in a position yet to be determined. The site was selected later that year and the city was plotted out by the end of the year. The territorial capital officially moved here in 1841 and remained here until statehood in 1846. It remained the state capital until 1876. Much of the city was damaged during major flooding in 2008.
